There’s no getting around the fact that getting a tattoo can be a painful procedure. Whether you’re getting a simple, small tattoo or a larger, more intricate design – the process of a needle etching a tattoo into your skin can make even the toughest person wince. The things we do for fashion!
Thankfully, there are skin numbing products available to alleviate pain while getting a tattoo – topical anaesthetics! These over-the-counter gels and creams can work wonders to numb the surface area of the skin that is being tattooed.
Ametop Gel is the most effective OTC topical anaesthetic available and can be bought at your local pharmacy or online.

What is Ametop Gel Used For?
Ametop Gel is a localised topical anaesthetic gel that contains Tetracaine which makes it one of the strongest skin-numbing gels available. It safely numbs the skin’s surface area where it is applied to reduce pain while getting a tattoo, piercing, cosmetic procedure, or as a skin preparation gel for blood tests or injections.
Why Use Ametop Gel for Tattoos?

TIPS ON HOW TO USE AMETOP GEL FOR TATTOOS
Before Applying Ametop Gel
- Check with your tattoo artist to confirm where and when you should apply the numbing gel.
- If necessary, shave the area of excess hair where the tattoo will be put.
- Wash your hands.
When Applying Ametop Gel
- Apply to clean and dry skin.
- Apply at least 1 hour before your tattoo appointment for maximum numbing.
- Only apply the numbing gel to the area that is going to be treated.
- Don’t rub in the gel, you will need a thick layer to numb the area thoroughly.
- Once applied, cover the gel with an air-tight and water-tight dressing, so the active ingredients absorb into the skin and do not get wiped off. Use plastic cling film if you need to apply the gel to a large area of your skin.
- Never use more than 60g for one session.
After Applying Ametop Gel
After one hour, you or your tattooist should take off the dressing and remove all excess gel. The numbing effect usually lasts at least 2 hours, so take note of this if you are getting a large or intricate tattoo that will take a long time to complete.
